The Green Mountain Film Festival Presents: The Ozu Diaries

In The Ozu Diaries, a master filmmaker finds his voice in the grey, disciplined shadows of a nation at war. With excerpts from Yasujirō Ozu’s personal writing, samplings from his films, and interviews with filmmakers such as Wim Wenders, Tsai Ming-liang, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the film traces Ozu’s life making movies and living in a changing Japan. As Japan moved into a more light-hearted era of peace after WWII, Ozu’s lens traded the heavy blacks and whites of survival for the vibrant, domestic warmth of Technicolor. This transition created a cinematic experience where the glowing red of a teapot or the amber of a summer afternoon does more than just fill the frame; through this synesthetic lens, the audience can practically feel the steam and taste the bittersweet harmony of a family life. A wonderful tribute to one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, The Ozu Diaries will warm your heart
