Filmed over two decades, Jia Zhangke’s Caught by the Tides splices together outtakes from his previous films as well as newly shot dramatic scenes, merging narrative and documentary forms to create a completely singular movie. Grounded in a love story between Qiaoqiao and Bin, the film follows Qiaoqiao as she travels through China searching for her lover. A hypnotic stream of colors and sounds, Caught by the Tides is narratively free, a collage of transporting images that are full of life and ache with the passage of time.
