Thirty years ago, a Vermont dairy farmer named Fred Tuttle did something nobody expected.

What began as a joke campaign eventually became one of the most memorable political stories in Vermont history. Along the way, Fred Tuttle became an unlikely folk hero whose plain-spoken humor, common sense, and deep connection to rural Vermont resonated far beyond his farm in Tunbridge.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the film, join us for a special screening of John O’Brien’s award-winning documentary Man with a Plan. The film captures a unique moment in Vermont history while telling a story that still feels relevant today—a story about community, politics, and the power of ordinary people to be heard.

Whether you remember Fred’s campaign or are discovering it for the first time, Man with a Plan offers a funny, thoughtful, and distinctly Vermont perspective on public life.

Following the screening, filmmaker John O’Brien and some local cast members from the original film will  join Pelin Kohn, Montpelier City Councilor, for a conversation about the film, Vermont today, and the challenges and opportunities facing our communities. The Q&A will be moderated by Chad Ervin, President of the Vermont Production Collective.

Together, they will explore what Vermont can learn from Fred Tuttle’s story and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing our communities today, including affordability, civic engagement, local leadership, and how ordinary citizens can help shape Vermont’s future.
